HP EliteBook Folio 9470m Windows 8 Laptop Computer

Not all contributors to ultrabooks have the same idea in mind. Deviating, as always, is HP, which now offers another confusing device on the Ultrabook category under a whooping price that starts at $1300; the EliteBook Folio 9470m. Don’t take this negatively, though; the EliteBook Folio 9470m of HP is but an ultrabook with a performing scheme of a full-powered desktop, and is aimed at corporate users who want an extra amount of power and reliability without the shorts in necessities. The question now is: is it all worth it?

Before you shove off yourself from where you are now, I’d like to put the EliteBook Folio 9470m of HP into the spotlight for you first. As said, being a business-centered device, the EliteBook Folio 9470m features an almost perfect range of ports and necessities except an optical drive (reasonably absent since people nowadays are already turning to flash drives, if not cloud storage services) and an HDMI port. What this means is that, you get a DisplayPort, three USB 3.0 ports, a Smart Card reader, a memory card slot, a full-sized VGA and Ethernet components, a Kensington Lock slot, and as expected for corporate devices, a fingerprint reader on the right wrist rest area.

All these said, it is somewhat particular also to note that the Folio of HP is not the lightest-and friendliest—Ultrabook you’d love to carry along. The device weighs 3.6 lbs., which is a bit too heavy especially when you remember it not having an optical drive. However, the HP EliteBook Folio 9470m gets itself back on track because of its looks: I am not really sure if the design generally looks good for corporate purposes, but I’d say HP played it safe by making the aesthetics also a prospect for consumers and even gamers alike, that is, if they want to take advantage of all the good specs this ultrabook has. Lastly, since it has the Ethernet port, HP’s Folio measures 0.75inches thick.

The HP EliteBook Folio 9470m is available in different stores with different configurations, though the company promised a fully customizable ‘plan.’ Talking about the goodies to choose from, the Folio caters to all 3rd-generation Intel Core processors, though it’s a bit frustrating not to choose the number of cores. The RAM for this Folio is locked at 16GB, which I presume, is a bit too much to many, plus the storage options from SATA II types, SED, mSATA, and even high-grade SSDs of up to 256GB. Since the Folio is aimed directly to the businesses, expect it not to have that best graphics, but luckily the model has the Intel GPU 4000, which is at least above average. Lastly, users can also opt for the 3G/4G models just in case they want to have data on the go.

Everything seemed to be too promising already except the big failure I found with this model. Especially if configured with a Windows 8 platform, having a non-touch, 1366x768p 14-inch display is but truly a shame. Viewing angles also drowned in this model, so sharing those presentations with a few people would better be done on a projector, which is then a hassle. However, HP must have done this for the reason of saving battery life, and even compensated it with another pointing device; a pointing stick sitting in between G and H keys, plus its own set of physical buttons for the left and right clicks. Having a not-so-bright display, having the keyboard back-lit may be a cause of strain or distraction to average users.

Lastly, the HP EliteBook Folio 9470m features a full range of Business solution like additional software and capabilities, which I can hardly discuss for now. Anyway, for its price, the EliteBook Folio 9470m seemed to be almost the finest ultrabook for the corporate side of the population, though having a very poor display might draw people back to using Windows 7 instead.
