Acer TravelMate P243 14-inch Laptop Computer

For those of you who are kicked off by the new Windows 8’s specs or features, here’s one for you to munch along the way on your day-to-day office errands. Built with business people on target, Acer stuck itself with the classics of sheer performance but with reliable body in its new TravelMate P243. With price that starts relatively high at $700, should this TravelMate be a good mate for business productivity? We’ll delve into that account.

With a rich black body, the Acer TravelMate P243 is not the type of notebook you’ll love to put on a show with a projector right beside it. Such weakness in trend or fashion is verified or amplified by its big bulky build with dimensions of 13.5×9.6×1.3 inches. Weighing 4.9 lbs., this P243 of Acer is of no match to the competition in the 14-inch class, and as for me, you’ll not want this on your lap on your way back home.

The Acer TravelMate P243 features a display that the average users would ask to comply with its price. With a relatively poor viewing angle, the display also has the very average resolution of 1366×768. Seriously, this notebook is simply designed for office tasks with few web activities at hand, but if you’re a gamer, the integrated graphics unit of Intel is not the one to make your heart beat in joy. Thankfully, the P243 shaved itself clean with its webcam at 1.3MP, and is good at taking photos of up to 1280x1024p. Meanwhile, chatting is still pleasing with its pre-installed Skype, plus an ordinary microphone and speaker system to at least ease your video conferences out.

While the display is not designed for Windows 8’s touch-demanding features, the Acer TravelMate P243 is but with Windows 7, which I believe a lot of users today would opt over the other. Coming together in performance is the dual-core processor of Intel that is either i3 to i5, RAM that starts at 4GB and ends at 8GB, and the standard storage drives of up to 500GB. Surely, all these specs should respond to everyday business needs: the TurboBoost technology should pump the processor if the situation requires it, and lastly, the Smart Caching and the Hyper-Threading technology that coincides with the processor should at least iron the wrinkles off.

Considerably, the Acer TravelMate P243 supports the most optimal ports an entrepreneur would ask for his on-site and off-site jobs. Surrounding the exterior are some components like: a full-sized HDMI, a USB 3.0, two USB 2.0s, audio in and out ports, Ethernet port, a DVD reader and writer, VGA port, multiple exhaust grilles, LED indicators, physical buttons for the power and for the Wi-Fi, and I forgot to mention, the display also supports Wireless Display (WiDi). There’s also a Bluetooth 4.0, if you’d ask.

Actually, I took a hard time trying to verify some ‘rumors’ about the Acer TravelMate P243. According to the site, the series boasts of some additional business security features that include a fingerprint reader or some wares like Personal Secure Drive (PSD). Surely these will add up to make this particular model truly a wise option for doing business, but how come I couldn’t find those except for some bloatware pre-installed that you have to register or pay for soon?

Lastly, I know you’d like to ask for its endurance: the Acer TravelMate P243 has a 4400-mAh removable battery that runs at just 3-4 hours (company had claimed this one to support the whole office hours), and it can only entail that you prefer leaving this on your desk for a charge before noon break. Should you ask for my verdict, I can only say that this supposed-to-be business-type notebook does not fully qualify to be one, and its price is actually high enough for you to buy a notebook with better specs than this one… or at least a tablet.
