Olympus PEN E-P3 Price in Singapore, Features, and Specs: The PEN E-P3 is a point and shoot camera from Olympus’ PEN series of compact system cameras. It has an interchangeable lens type digital format and is featured as a “new generation system camera.” The PEN E-P3 is the latest addition to its fore brothers, the PEN E-P1 and PEN E-P2. The camera was launched on July 2011 along with the PEN E-PL3 (L for light) and PEN E-PM1 (M for mini). With the PEN E-P3 bringing in many updates and refinement, Olympus seeks to address some of the major issues and setbacks of the other PENs.
While the E-PL3 is geared towards those who are looking to upgrade from a high-end compact model and the E-PM1 is for those who prefer very compact cameras, the Olympus PEN E-P3 sits at the top and provides for advanced users who want to combine traditional styles and functionality with advanced digital imaging.
The Olympus PEN E-P3 is designed in a similar way to its predecessors. It is built based on the look and feel of classic 1960’s cameras. It is relatively small and light, not too cumbersome to carry around the neck and would not generally attract a lot of unprecedented attention when flaunted in public. The unit comes with a pair of lenses: a 12mm M. Zuiko f/2.0 wide-angle lens and a 4-42mm M. Zuiko f/3.5-5.6 variable zoom lens. The latter one is better suited for walk -around photography and is supplied as the extra lens.

The body of the Olympus PEN E-P3 is mostly made up of metal and aluminum alloy, giving the camera a solid and compact feel. There is a rectangular rubber grip on the front for easy handling that can be removed using a screw. This gives the user a choice of either removing the front grip or customizing the appearance of the camera with other grip designs. As mentioned, there are a lot of changes from the old models, the biggest of which is a built in flash that is deliberately put up so as not to interrupt the front of the camera. In addition, the accessory ports are situated neatly into the body design so that they do not stick out and are pleasantly aesthetic.
Aside from the expected controls and physical buttons, the Olympus PEN E-P3 also features a 3.0-inch OLED display. The screen is composed of a fully touch enabled panel that consists of 614, 000 colors VGA-equivalent with 3:2 aspect ratio. Navigating and zooming through the photographs and videos now becomes very easy and convenient. The display also helps in a variety of tasks like AF point selection, shutter release, and menu navigation. It can access some of the other functions of the camera as well. More importantly, the additional functionality provided by the touch screen can be disabled with no compromise to the camera’s performance.
Aside from the flash, the Olympus PEN E-P3 also comes with a built-in autofocus illuminator light that is situated on the front of the camera. It is a bright orange LED that aids in focusing, especially under low light. This is a welcome addition to the previous PENs that seem to have problems with focusing under this type of environment. The ‘fast AF’ system is 120 Hz and has been updated to 35 zones, which covers most of the area of the image. Aside from the focus system, the movie recording specification has also been upgraded to Full HD 1080i60 in AVCHD format with direct recording and display magnification buttons. There is also an updated 12 MP LIVE MOS sensor and an in-body image stabilization system. Other upgrades include a live guide control iAuto, iEnhance color mode, and revised and expanded art filters.
The Olympus PEN E-P3 runs on a dual-core TruePic VI processor and comes in black, white, and silver colors.
In summary, the Olympus PEN E-P3 is a very straightforward and a user-friendly piece of advanced gadgetry. Its specs matches those of entry to mid-level dSLRs and is definitely a great choice for a compact digital camera.
