Toshiba Portege Z835 Ultrabook Price in Singapore, Tech Specs, and Other Features

Toshiba Portege Z835 Ultrabook Price in Singapore, Tech Specs, and Other Features: We take a look at the Toshiba Portege Z835, Toshiba’s new ultrabook. We get mixed feelings from the notebook and we share our findings with you. Read on for the price and full details.
Design and construction
The Portege Z835 sports a chassis made from an alloy of magnesium and is done in a dark gunmetal gray finish. The material used in the construction of its chassis provides a sturdy base that is at the same time lightweight. The lid of the Portege Z835 is also covered in magnesium but the innards of the lid of the ultrabook is made from plastic which gives it a rather flimsy feel to it.
Also, the structure of the magnesium chassis of the Portege Z835 has been reinforced with plastic ribbings done in a honeycomb pattern to ensure the stability of the whole framework. Sad to say, the Portege Z835 lacks the rounded corners we often see in most ultrabooks today but instead have sharp corners with 90-degree angles that are also reinforced with magnesium.
The Portege Z835 has dimensions of 12.4 x 8.9 x 0.3 inches at its thinnest edge and 0.6 inches at its thickest. Its weight on the other hand as it tipped the scales is pegged at 2.4 pounds, which is a half-pound lighter than the 13-inch MacBook Air. Despite the slim form factor and light weight of the Portege Z835, it still manages to have a solid feel all throughout its frame.
In terms of its aesthetics, the Portege Z835 packs a minimalist design that almost gives the ultrabook an industrialist look and feel like the Macbook Air and the Asus Zenbook UX31. It screams simplicity all over and only has orange and green status lights that serve as accent pieces on an otherwise gunmetal gray finish. The design of the hinge of the Portege Z835 is also a nice touch to the ultrabook wherein it eschews the favored pair of hinges on either sides of the display that we commonly see among notebooks but instead goes a single long hinge that hooks up the deck of the Portege Z835 to its lid.

Under the hood of the Portege Z835
Pundits would argue that the components that the Portege Z835 packs under the hood are not as impressive as those found in other entries in this category. Most would agree to this observation because the Portege Z835 only has an Intel Core i3-2367M processor running at 1.4GHz for its processor. This is in turn paired with the standard 4GB of DDR3 RAM, which is also upgradeable to a maximum of 8GB.
This combination of the processor and RAM in the guts of the Portege Z835 is able to power Windows 7 Home Premium, the ultrabook’s operating system. No dedicated GPU can be found in the internals of the Portege Z835 so it just relies on its integrated Intel HD Graphics chip to ensure that graphical matters are covered properly.
In terms of its storage capacity, the Portege Z835 comes with a solid state drive with a capacity of 128 GB that would handle a user’s storage needs. In addition to that, the SSD of the ultrabook would also complement the RAM-processor combination of the Portege Z835 with an additional speed boost.
The display and other features of the Portege Z835
In terms of its display, the Portege Z835 comes with widescreen display packing a diagonal of 13.3 inches. The resolution of the display of the ultrabook though is pegged at just 1366 x 768, which is significantly lower than that of the Acer UX31’s 1600 x 900. The display of the Portege Z835 also features LED backlighting which makes it very visible even if the surroundings have lots of ambient light.
As for its sound, the integrated speakers of the Portege Z835 makes use of Waves MaxxAudio technology but that isn’t much help really because of the low overall volume that gets blasted out of the speakers.
As for its input devices, the Portege Z835 rides the bandwagon with its keyboard that packs chiclet-style keys. Because the keyboard of the ultrabook spans from one edge of its deck to the other, the keys have ample spacing in between that minimizes the tendency of typo errors. It is also backlit though the backlight is not as bright as we would want it to be. The trackpad of the Portege Z835 on the other hand is a bit smallish for comfort but is very smooth and its surface has a low-friction feature and offers precision scrolling and multi-touch gestures.
The bottom line
The Toshiba Portege Z835 overall is a good ultrabook to carry around town. It has the classic good looks that give it an elegant and classy feel but the internals of the Portege Z835 leave a lot to be desired. Souped-up internals would definitely make the Portege Z835 a lot more desirable, so to speak.
Toshiba Portege Z835 Ultrabook Price in Singapore Dollar (SGD): Approximately S$ 1,050.00
