Design and construction
Before the Amazon Kindle Fire came to being, Barnes and Noble already was ahead in the “more than an e-reader, almost a tablet” category when it released the Barnes and Noble Nook Color last year. And to spoil Amazon’s grandiose plans in the said category, Barnes and Noble is trying to level the playing field by releasing the B&N Nook Tablet, the successor to the Nook Color.
In terms of its design and aesthetics, there is not much difference between the B&N Nook Tablet and its older brother. The only noticeable difference at first glance is the fact that the Barnes and Noble Nook Tablet it its metallic finish done in a slightly lighter color in addition to the back panel that has slightly more texture. As for its dimensions, the B&N Nook Tablet is almost similar to the Nook Color with its measurements of 8.1 x 5.9 x 0.48 inches. It is slightly lighter though as it tips the scales at just 14.1 ounces.
The B&N Nook Tablet’s most distinctive feature though is the carabiner loop that is found in the lower left portion of the tablet. This design is based on the decision to set apart and easily distinguish the B&N Nook Tablet from the competition that fell prey to looking like each other in addition to packing almost the similar internals.
The left edge of the B&N Nook Tablet contains the volume buttons of the tablet while the power button is housed in the right flank of the device. A 3.5mm headphone jack on the other hand is found on the top edge of the tablet while the bottom edge of the B&N Nook Tablet houses its microUSB port. The size and shape of the Barnes and Noble Nook Tablet comes in really handy especially if you are the type that engages in long reading sessions because these attributes of the tablet give way to its being very comfortable when held even for extended periods.

The internals of the Barnes and Noble Nook Tablet
The Nook Color may have had an impressive specs sheet during its time but the B&N Nook Tablet certainly blows that away to oblivion with its souped-up internals. Under the hood, we see the components that line up the guts of the B&N Nook Tablet that are tasked primarily to breathe power to the operations of the B&N Nook Tablet.
At the heart of its operations lies the Barnes and Noble Nook Tablet’s Texas Instruments OMAP 4430 chipset. This has a SoC architecture where both the processor and GPU of the tablet are inside the chipset already. For its processor, the B&N Nook Tablet has a dual-core Scorpion processor running at 1GHz supplying the tablet with the computing power that it requires. On the other hand, a PowerVR SGX540 graphics chip takes care of all graphical concerns that the tablet encounters.
As for its system memory, the Barnes and Noble Nook Tablet comes with a full gigabyte of RAM which pretty much supports its dual-core processor in running the operating system of the device. In terms of storage space, the B&N Nook Tablet comes with an internal memory pegged at 16GB, which is translated to as much as 10,000 e-books. Pick up a microSD card and you can virtually beef up the internal memory of the B&N Nook Tablet to as much as 32GB using its memory expansion slot.
The display of the B&N Nook Tablet
In terms of its display, the B&N Nook Tablet sports a 7-inch VividView touchscreen display of the IPS type. It is a high-res type of display with a 600 x 1024 resolution and pixel density pegged at 169 ppi. In addition to that, the display of the Barnes and Noble Nook Tablet is fully laminated so there are no air gaps found in it that pretty much leads to improved clarity and reduced glare and reflection. With this attribute, it is very easy to read outdoors just as indoors.
Other features of the Barnes and Noble Nook Tablet
In addition to its impressive specs sheet, the Barnes and Noble Nook Tablet also comes with a very impressive features set. It has an integrated email app that lets you do your email stuff from just one inbox. It also comes with built-in Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n that lets you access the free Wi-Fi connectivity offered I n B&N stores. It also comes with preloaded apps such as Nook Friends, Media Gallery, Sudoku, Crossword, Chess, Pandroa Internet Radio Hulu Plus and NetFlix among others that add to the functionality of the B&N Nook Tablet.
The bottom line
Priced at $249, the Barnes and Noble Nook Tablet is definitely worth every penny you will shell out. It has great looks combined with impressive internals that definitely “extinguishes” the Kindle Fire even if it is slightly pricier than the Amazon product. With the B&N Nook Tablet, Barnes and Noble not only leveled the playing field, it turned it into its advantage.
