HP Envy 14 Laptop Computer Preview: Price, Features and Other Details – In today’s world where mobility and connectivity rule a person’s life and every man’s waking moment is influenced by technology from the moment he wakes up to the moment he dozes off for a night of rest, we see the market getting replete with notebooks and laptops that give every person the mobility and connectivity he needs.
With these weapons, a person can be online most of the time and still even be able to get some work done even while on the move. Never has a person become this productive, thanks in part to the role played by these mobile devices that have brought us a lot of good things.
In the case of HP and its HP Envy 13 and Envy 15 notebooks, the company released to the market these couple of high-styled notebooks that are aimed at taking the MacBook Pro from Apple head-on. Unfortunately, these pair of HP notebooks was hampered by the fact that their price tags are too high in comparison to what they are able to do, specs-wise.
The company learned from this mistake and went back to the drawing boards to come up with a notebook that will definitely reclaim the lost glory for the Envy line. At that time, nobody is getting envious of the Envy so to speak.
With the release of the HP Envy 14, the company is again right on track and have made up for the previous Envy 13 and Envy 15 blunders by ensuring that the Envy 14, which sits right smack in the middle of its predecessors, is as perfect as it can be?
That being said, what then can we expect from the HP Envy 14? What kind of changes have HP instituted on the notebook? What kind of components does it have under the hood? What price tag is attached to the notebook? Read on as we take the HP Envy 14 for a ride.
Design and construction
It is said that the most radical change that the Envy 14 has to go through is its getting a 14.5-inch display in addition to design changes such as the addition of an optical drive and its keyboard getting the backlight treatment.
The Envy 14 measures 14.0 x 9.3 x 1.1 inches so its waist line make it a bit stouter than its predecessors – by not that much though. Sliding in into your messenger bag wouldn’t be an issue at all, so don’t fret. Its weight of 5.4 pounds is just right but makes it lighter than the 15-inch MacBook Pro. At this weight, carrying the Envy 14 around town wouldn’t be that much of a punishment on your back if you ask me.

Under the hood
The Envy line of notebooks from HP does not only look good on the outside. They are also veritable beasts on the inside. In this cast, the Envy 14 is not an exception. To power up its operations, the Envy 14 relies on a second generation Sandy Bridge Intel Core i7-2820QM with 4 cores and runs at 2.3 GHz but can easily be overclocked to 3.4 GHz by making use of Intel’s Turbo Boost technology.
This very powerful processor is paired in turn with 16GB of DDR3 RAM to keep things moving along rather smoothly and snappily. For all matters that are graphics-related, the Envy 14 has its dedicated ATI Radeon HD 6630 GPU with 1GB of DDR3 VRAM manning the helm. For storage purposes, the Envy 14 packs a 160GB Solid State Drive to complement the processor-RAM combination of the notebook and to add some speed boost to the performance of the Envy 14.
The display and other features
As mentioned earlier, one of the more radical changes that the Envy 14 went through is its display. It now packs a 14.5-inch LED-backlit High-Def BrightView Infinity Display that has a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. Due to its LED-backlit nature, the display of the notebook is expected to provide life-like representation to images and colors are brighter, more vivid and a whole lot sharper. Not only that, the display of the Envy 14 provides exceptional viewing angles in addition to above average sunlight legibility.
In terms of input devices, the Envy 14 features a keyboard that has chiclet style keys that seem to be the rage nowadays. The keys are covered in a soft touch material and provide exceptionally good tactile feedback that the typing experience in the Envy 14 is raised a notch higher. In addition to that, the keyboard now has a backlight for typing in dim situations, a feature not found in its predecessors.
The touchpad on the other hand has gone through a lot of improvements as well given the many complaints about the touchpad of the Envy 13 and Envy 15. In the case of the Envy 14, the touchpad of the notebook is wider and provides precision scrolling and navigation.
The bottom line
As always mentioned by our teachers in the past, revising a term paper makes it even more perfect than the last time. This is the case with the HP Envy 14 wherein mistakes from its predecessors were refined to get to what we have right now. With these refinements, the Envy 14 now has a superior build quality, an improved display and nice audio, in addition to the power-breathing components that lurk underneath its hood. In short, this is one formidable notebook that can take on any other notebook lining up the shelve, anytime, anywhere.
