Design and construction
The FinePix HS20 EXR at first glance is obviously packing a design associated with the traditional DSLR shooter. The digital camera is that small or lightweight but entry-level shooters from the DSLR category are of almost the same size and weight as that of the HS20 EXR.
The FinePix HS20 EXR measures 131 x 91 x 126 mm and tips the scales at a rather hefty 730 grams. As is expected from a shooter that packs the design aesthetics of a DSLR shooter, the HS20 EXR has a protrusion in the front right panel of its body that acts as the grip of the camera. The grip is done in a rubber finish and is rather deep so when you use the shooter, even single-handedly, you tend to be able to get a secure and firm hold on the shooter.
The thumb-rest found at the back panel of the shooter, which happens to have a contoured shape, works well with the rubberized grip of the FinePix HS20 EXR for a more secured hold. The rubber finish is extended to the other side of the lens of the digital camera and this provides both hands of a user to get a good grip on the shooter.
The buttons and controls of the HS20 EXR are spread out in a well thought-of manner in addition to the digital camera packing several quick access buttons that can be configured for often-used settings such as AF mode, ISO and the like.

Key features of the HS20 EXR
To ensure that the HS20 EXR is always at the ready to come up with images of exceptional image quality, it has an EXR CMOS sensor that packs an effective resolution of 16 megapixels. This is the same sensor found on the Fujifilm F550 EXR and is wired from its backside to allow more light to get to the photo diodes and In the process increasing the sensitivity of the sensor in dimly-lit conditions.
The HS20 EXR also makes use of the Fuji EXR technology developed by the company for its digital cameras wherein the sensor adjusts for the optimum range, sensitivity and resolution based on the scene that it will be shooting in. the shooter has an aspect ratio of 4:3 and is able to turn up images of up to 4608 x 3456 pixels.
The 16MP sensor of the FinePix HS20 EXR works in conjunction with the EXR image processor of the shooter. The image processor actually has multi-cores that is responsible for the speedy performance of the digital camera in both video and stills mode. In fact, the claim to fame of Fuji shooters that pack super zoom capabilities is high-speed shooting and the HS20 EXR is not an exception to this. It is not a match to its predecessor but the shooter is still capable of a decent burst-shooting mode of 8 frames per second at full 16-megapixel resolution. Tone down on the resolution to 8 megapixels and the burst-shooting mode is cranked up to 11 frames per second.
High-speed shooting is also available in video mode and the FinePix HS20 EXR is capable of recording VGA clips at 80 frames per second. Select QVGA resolution and you get 160 frames per second while a clip shot in 320 x 112 pixels bumps up the speed shooting to 320 frames per second. If you’d rather come up with quality clips, the HS20 EXR will get you Full HD clips in 1920 x 1080p at 30 frames per second or 720p HD movies at 60 frames per second.
Since the HS20 EXR comes from the stable of advanced super zoom digital cameras, it comes with fully manual and semi-auto shooting modes such as Program, Manual, Shutter Priority and Aperture Priority. It also packs and Automatic mode for some point-and-shoot goodness and comes with a lot of Scene modes (a total of 17 to be exact).
The HS20 EXR also comes with a very intuitive Motion Panorama feature that gives a user the capability to come up with panoramas in 120, 180 or 360 degrees by simply panning the HS20 EXR in a selected direction and pressing the shutter button once.
The bottom line
The Fujifilm FinePix HS20 EXR is definitely an attractive shooter and can be a cause of impulse buy. The 30x zoom capability of the shooter is definitely a selling point in addition to its shooting modes. A caveat though is that though the shooter looks and handles like a DSLR, the HS20 EXR is still an advanced compact and it is unfair to expect the digital camera to come up with DSLR-like image quality. With that in mind, the HS20 EXR is definitely a must-have.
