We were satisfied with the experience and have compiled a comprehensive preview of the Zenbook UX31 for your reading pleasure.
Design and construction
The reign of Apple’s MacBook Air in the ultrabook category might just come to an end with the release of the Asus Zenbook UX31. A quick look at the new product of Asus gives you the impression that it will surely make waves in the ultrabook category with its wafer-thin design that makes it eerily reminiscent of the MacBook Air. That is where the similarities end though.
In terms of its vital stats, the Zenbook UX31 measures 12.8 x 8.8 x 0.11 inch at the front and 0.71 inch at its rear. The Asus ultrabook tips the scales at a scant 2.86 pounds thereby making it ideal to be carried around town. Aesthetics-wise, not too many complaints can be thrown at the Zenbook UX31. The chassis of the Zenbook UX31 has what the company calls a spun finish and we see concentric circles radiating outward in its lid made fashioned from aluminum.
In terms of its construction though, Asus makes use of a monoshell chassis made of metal which seems to emulate the aluminum unibody construction that Apple seems to favor a lot. The only difference is that Asus, instead of using single-piece construction methodology in the Zenbook UX31, instead bolted the underside of the Zenbook UX31’s chassis together with its palm rest.
Ultrabooks this thin somehow give off the impression of being fragile and susceptible to flexing when pressure is applied but Asus was able to design the together in such a way that the solid build quality of the ultrabook cannot be called into question. The hinge mechanism of the Zenbook UX31 has the right tightness to it while the whole chassis and lid of the ultrabook was able to withstand our palm press without groaning in complaint.

Under the hood
The Zenbook UX31 may be seen as an attractive eye candy by most people (and it definitely is) but the ultrabook is without a doubt a veritable beast when you look at the components lurking under its hood. The Zenbook UX31 makes use of an Intel Core i5-2557M processor which happens to be of the dual-core type. The processor runs at a clock speed of 1.7GHz and works in conjunction with 4GB of DDR3 RAM. This combination of the RAM and processor in the guts of the Zenbook UX31 proves to be a deadly pair and can actually take on the most demanding of tasks without missing a step.
The Zenbook UX31 doesn’t pack a dedicated GPU but relies on its integrated Intel Graphics 3000 module to handle graphical concerns to ease off some of the processing brunt off of the processor. In terms of storage space, the Zenbook UX31 packs a SATA Revision 3.0 Solid State Drive with a capacity of 128GBB and complements the processor-RAM combination of the ultrabook with an added speed burst.
The display and other features of the Zenbook UX31
As for its display, the Zenbook UX31 sports a 13.3-inch which foregoes the standard 1366 x 768 resolution in 13 inchers but instead packs a standard resolution of 1600 x 900 pixels. Not only did the boost in resolution provides added screen space with which to scroll through documents and web pages but the bump also gives way to crisp media playback.
With this kind of resolution, the display of the Zenbook UX31 is capable of providing images that seem to jump right at you. Colors were rendered in an almost life-like manner in addition to having lots of detail. The viewing angles in the display are also pretty impressive that even if you are not in the best position to look at the display, the onscreen action can still be easily made out.
To complement the impressive display of the Zenbook UX31, the ultrabook makes use of Bang and Olufsen speakers that take advantage of ICEpower technology. With this in play, the Zenbook UX31 is still able to blast out a surprisingly loud sound despite the fact that the speakers of the ultrabook are buried in its chassis.
In terms of input devices, the Zenbook UX31 packs a keyboard with chiclet-style keys that have ample spacing between the keys. They feel just right in the fingertips with their non-slippery finish and are able to provide nice tactile feedback when pressed on. The same could not be said though for the Zenbook UX31’s trackpad which tended to be jumpy and imprecise at times.
The bottom line
With the release of the Zenbook UX31, Asus has solidified its foothold in the ultrabook category and even offering more than token competition to the MacBook Air 2011. The Asus ultrabook packs all the bells and whistles we could ever expect, has the classic good looks that give the notebook and elegant look and ultimately packs the impressive components under its hood that make the Asus Zenbook UX31 a veritable beast.
